The original church, built around 1696 to 1700, was destroyed by a typhoon in 1866.
Attempts to enlarge it led to its dismantling by Fr. Pablo Almazan, OP, but it was never rebuilt.
The newer San Fernando de Cabagan church in Centro Ilagan was initiated in 1777 by Fr. Pedro San Pedro, OP, and completed by Fr. Joaquin Sancho, OP, in 1783, featuring some of the region's oldest bells.
